Northern Colorado Culture


In 1985, Loveland was the first city in Colorado to adopt an Art in Public Places ordinance, designating one percent of the city's capital construction projects of $50,000 or more for the purchase of art. Sculpture and 2-dimensional artwork adorn city buildings, parks and public spaces. Currently, the city's art collection is valued at more than 6 million dollars with approximately 83% of the total value of the collection donated by organizations and individuals. Presently, there are 269 individual pieces of artwork within the collection. The City of Fort Collins has also recently adopted an Arts in Public Places ordinance to provide a more cultural experience for the residents of Northern Colorado. The city of Fort Collins also sponsors the annual New West Fest a collection of artists, music, food and fun for everyone in Northern Colorado. In addition to Arts in Public Places, there are other cultural activities that Loveland and Fort Collins have to offer: Movie theaters ~ (within 15 miles) 6 Libraries ~ (within 15 miles) 13 Museums ~ (accredited by AAM within 30 miles) 1 It is important to the community to provide cultural activities for people to enjoy. The Budweiser Event Center, located conveniently between Loveland and Fort Collins also provides an array of sports, entertainment and leisure for everyone.

Poudre School District serves the Northern part of Larimer County including Fort Collins, Timnath, Red Feather Lakes, Crystal Lakes, LaPorte and Wellington. Northern Colorado History


Settlers in the Big Thompson Valley were scattered on small farms along the banks of the river. To the west of the present-day city of Loveland was a community started in 1858 by Spanish-speaking Mariano Medina. Medina ran a trading post and operated a toll bridge over the Big Thompson River. The small settlement went under various names including Miraville, Merival, Big Thompson and Mariano's Crossing. In 1862, it became a stage stop on the Overland, and in 1868, a post office was established under the name Namaqua.
